Media: the Alternative News
THROUGHOUT THE
DAYS OF MY YOUTH there were independent newspapers everywhere
in Canada. These papers reflected, in diverse ways, the democratic process
and the struggle towards the realization of The
Dream of Canada.
Today, in the new millenium,
giving 'airtime' to diverse views and healthy debates is at a premium.
This is because media outlets are now concentrated in a handful of
individuals and corporations who more or less promote a likeminded
worldview, which includes debatable notions such as:
government is inefficient, the private sector is efficient
a social welfare state is inherently bad because it encourages people
(inherently lazy by nature) not to work
the market sector is inherently good, because it equally balances
everything out
In place of healthy disclosure and debate of these
and many issues, a centralized "spin" on information and events
has occurred. I call the shaped result one-dimensional
news- or the REAL "alternative" news. As well
as alienating and dumbing people down, this media devolution
gravitates primarily around an underlying premise ('spin') that there
is only so much money, and no more.
The following
links will explain the critical significance of this premise, and show
that it is false.
Let us begin with a 'singular event' which occurred in 1974. It wasn't what you would call an earth-shaking event. It was more like a non-event! But I call it 'singular' because it radically reversed the progressive direction taking place globally at that time. This event was the adaptation of the theory of Monetarism.
