The group came up with a thought provoking list of things that we can do to be part of the solution, not the problem. Here are transcripts of what was on the flipcharts, (right) and the same info put into sentences for easier reading (left).
SOLUTIONS– sentence form SOLUTIONS - Point form
Forego development to decrease environmental degradation if necessary. Develop alternative energy. We have to look after our changing planet - we owe something. Reduce consumption. Investigate how to use less oil with minimum adverse effects. Change the Canadian Constitution to protect resources.

Push for oil taxation and regulation. Money for cleanup of environmental degradation can be gotten from federal royalties on tarsand oil or carbon tax. Observe health problems suffered by oil rig workers doing 12-hr shifts & prevent them from being repeated. Strive for balance and control of expansion.

Express your own convictions and concerns. Keep planting the seed in apathetic minds til they get it. Acknowledge and deal with shock and confusion. Read, and give evidence. First see the problem, then do something: write an info article or send an e-mail.

Contribute effort where you are. Network - get neighbours excited by speaking; emails are also good. People have to demand control. Acquire knowledge to gain power. Do your own research & distinguish myth from fact. Get info on politician's tricks for empowerment & learn to counter things that disempower you.

Put public pressure on politicians. We need political will. Nationalize resources. We have to do something about corporate control of spineless politicians.

We have to reform the Corporations Act re corporations haveing the same rights as individuals*

*ADDED NOTE * In 1886, The Supreme Court ruled in Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad that a private corporation was a natural person under the U.S. Constitution, sheltered by the Bill of Rights and the 14th Amendment.
Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was to write, 60 years later: "There was no history, logic, or reason given to support that view."
The Supreme Court thus effectively sabotaged blossoming social protest movements against incorporated wealth.
The U.S. Constitution makes no mention of corporations.

CONCERNS – sentence form CONCERNS - Point form
A ridiculous situation deserves ridicule.

There can be problems in the details when applying solutions, or there can be unintended consequences of such solutions. For example, the carbon tax will have the effect of not only increasing the price of gas for cars, but also the price of heating oil for homes. It is far-reaching.

Nationalization does not always work in favour of the people. For example in PEMA in Mexico there were financial losses due to nepotism. In Saudi Arabia, Iran and Lybia, there was outright looting by the gov’t.

Corporations will steal if they can't buy. Ralph Klein agreed years ago to give away Alberta. Corps have right of "persons".*

Situations will worsen before improving. People care about money almost exclusively and are focused on themselves and personal amusements.

A video gets the message through.

We need to monitor our own states of mind. Do we have greed for our oil? Are we building resentment? Are we being negative?

Resources in Canada are our custodial concern . Development damages the environment.

A bad thing about the video we saw is that it employs ridicule; a good thing about it is that it counters its negative emotional impact by bringing out interactive responses.

Oil sands project inflicts internal damage.

We play role in allowing corporations to make money. The corporations externalize the costs of dealing with the damage - taxpayers pay for cleanup – while internalizing profits.

This is a senseless political situation. The video gave new info. The system biased towards people at the top economically. We are experiencing the ostrich syndrome during planetary changes. We've allowed power to go where it shouldn’t.

We are suffering shocks. We're going to hit the wall. But we will learn what we need essentially to make us happy.

Ontario potential wind power = proposed nuclear power. Oil is the cheapest energy source. We should ask what it is used for and what price. People are distraught and unhappy.

Oil production needs fresh water. The U.S. has ruined nearly all its water & Canada is doing the same. Lindsay William's says US has enough oil in its North. The ar in Iraq was about keeping Iraq's oil unsold and raising prices - the invasion worked!
