North American 'Union' niThe North American Union

The North American Union (NAU) was signed in March 2005 by Bush, Martin, and Fox. It is essentially an extension of NAFTA, which further diminishes Canadian control over our resources, defence, and even administrative policies. It is a consolidation of North American resources under American control. Insofar as that is so, it further diminishes the possibility of The Dream of Canada.

As was the case with the Free Trade Agreement and NAFTA, the NAU was developed by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), the most powerful big business lobby group in the country, and was duly rubber-stamped by our 'leaders'. The CCCE outline is called "The North American Security and Prosperity Initiative". The CCCE notes the free trade deals have been a success- and they have- for the corporate elite who participate. For the majority of Canadians, free trade has caused The Dream of Canada.-our standard of living- to stagnate or decline.

The FTA was an election issue in the 80's; NAFTA was an election issue in the 90s. There was NO DEBATE regarding the contents or significance of the NAU in the no-issue 2006 election. Consolidated neo-conservative media (link above) inhibit such debates.

For more information about NAU, I would suggest Maude Barlow's new book "too close for comfort". Details available at www.canadians.org
